Floral Garden Clocks

The most natural type of garden clock is not as easy to come by like purchasing a garden clock through a store or online. It takes time and patience to get this type of garden clock, which is ironic because the end result eventually gives you the time you are looking for. Confused by these vague sentences? The answer is obvious, if you take the time (pardon the pun) to think about natural clocks.

Give up? Alright, alright: a flower bed of various flowers that open at specific times of the day. The flowers are grown in order of what time they open and close, creating a visual, floral clock on the ground of the earth. With enough effort this clock can be precise down to the minute, which is not only a beautiful type of natural clock but also a time consuming clock.

This idea was introduced by England’s John McHattie of Edinburgh Parks who was Edinburgh’s city park superintendent in 1902. He, along with clock makers James Ritchie and Son developed the first floral clock that calculated only the hours in 1903 and added the minutes in 1904. Mechanisms were installed to create sound devices that alerted when each hour turned. They also installed the hands of the clock to follow the flowers as they open to give exact visual readings of what time of day it is.

It is very difficult to take care of this garden because of its size and placement of flowers. Due to the fact that every type of flower opens at a precise time, they are planted next to each other in order to create the illusion of a constant flow around the “clock” at a distance. The clock is made up of a thousand small plants, which in such a great number takes up quite a lot of space. When pruning and trimming, the person on duty has to use a ladder to separate himself from stepping on the garden.

It is possible to create your own garden clock of this nature. You just have to research what plants you want to incorporate in the garden, if they are able to even grow in your location, and how big you want it. You could keep it small, plant the flowers in rows next to each other, create a clock-like space where the flowers are planted in pie-pieces next to each other- virtually you can have a unique, natural garden clock if you can put the time and effort into it.
